Description: Diesel locomotive RENFE 353-005. Bien Aparecida In 1968 Renfe bought five 353 series loco’s to pull the Talgo III and Talgo III-RD rakes. These locomotives were produced in Germany by Krauss Maffei
with some added features to their predecessor the 352.
- More powerful traction, more speed & more weight.
- Two driving cabs so that the loco could run both ways.
- Doors on both sides to facilitate communication with the towed coaches.
- Double system of traction to pull coaches of Talgo III (Scharfengerg) and Talgo III-RD (hook and screw coupler).
The bogies have interior grease boxes, disc brakes mounted over the wheels and brake shoes which operate when necessary in addition to the disc
brakes.
The 353 diesels have on occasion been used to do high speed tests. So the loco 353-005 (Virgen de la Bien Aparecida) reached 222km/h on the 20th
May 1972 pulling a Talgo 111 between Barcelona and Madrid.
On the 4th of June 1978 loco 353-001 (Virgen de Lourdes) reached 230km/h pulling the Talgo Pendular between Alcazar de San Juan and Alicante
establishing a world speed record for diesel traction.
