Description: Diesel locomotive RENFE 354-006. Virgen de Aránzazu DC The series 354 diesel-hydraulic locomotives were purchased by Renfe in 1983 to pull the Talgo Pendular trains. In concept they were similar to the
353 series with the following basic differences:
- More powerful diesel motors.
- Hydraulic transmission instead of hydromechanic transmission with an additional hydraulic brake.
- Two driving systems:pre-fixed velocity and manual control.
- Conventional traction and impact system.
- The two additional groups of diesel alternator motors were discontinued as they had extra power from the generator coach in the Talgo
coach rakes. This meant that the 354 series could not pull the earlier Talgo III series of coaches as they did not have an extra generator
coach.
The 354 bogies are identical to the 353 series bogies. All the locomotives were built in Germany by Krauss Maffei, with their maintenance being done
at the Talgo sheds in Aravaca,Madrid.
The 354 has a fixed speed of 180km/h, but is able to get up to speeds of 230km/h. This makes the 354 series one of the faster diesels of the world.
