History of

In November 1820 the sinking of the whaling ship Essex and the survival of part of its crew, moved the USA.

A year earlier it had set sail from Nantucket, initiating a new whaling campaign that was to last two and a half years across the South Pacific.

Captained by Captain George Pollard, the whaling ship Essex was attacked by a large whale, attacking it several times until it sank 3,700 km off the coast of South America.

Of the 21 crew members, only eight were rescued.

Herman Melville was inspired by this tragic shipwreck to write Moby Dick, one of the great works of universal literature.

The title of the work was taken from the name of a real whale: "Mocha Dick", which was sighted in the 19th century near Mocha Island in southern Chile.
