British 17/25 pdr Anti-Tank Gun 'PHEASANT'

The appearance of the Tiger tank in North Africa at the end of 1942, prompted the British to rush the 17 Pounder anti-tank gun into service. However the 17 Pounder gun barrels were ready before the gun carriages, and it was decided to mount these barrels on the 25 Pounder carriage. The resulting weapon was designated the 17/25 Pounder, and was given the code name "Pheasant" for security reasons. At least 100 conversions were carried out and these were shipped to Tunisia in February 1943. The Pheasant proved to be robust and worked remarkably well, the only criticism was its tall profile. It served for several months until the correct carriage was made available. The 17 Pounder was a remarkable weapon able to destroy German armour at long range, it was considered the best Allied anti-tank gun of WWII. Firing APCBC ammunition it could penetrate 140mm of armour angled at 30 degree, at a distance of 1000 meters.
