German Officer Kursk 1943 July 3, 1943. There is a sense of anticipation in the air as final preparations are made for tomorrow’s massive attack on Russian defenders in the Kursk salient. A German commander gathers a small knot of troops around him to study his map and discuss their orders in the opening gambit of the attack. It is hot and dry, the steppes parched by the summer heat. They stand in the shade of a Panzer IV tank that is already fueled and armed ready for Operation Citadel, the largest armored conflict in the history of mankind.
