De Havilland D.H.4 avec moteur RAF 3a The RAF 3a powered DH.4 was a modified version of the famous aircraft of WWI, developed in 1916 by the well known designer Geoffrey de Havilland. It’s main difference was the RAF 3a engine installation, which permitted an improvement in the Aircraft’s High-altitude performance. It led to the use of the RAF 3a DH.4 in squadrons whose main tasks were high altitude photo reconnaissance and interception of enemy airships (Zeppelins). Due to unreliable operation of the engine and its design flaws, the RAF 3a DH.4 was built in much smaller quantities than other versions of the aircraft.
