Greek Hoplite - VI Century B.C.
The Hoplite was the armed unit, of the City-State, of Classical Greece, All the "free" citizens, from adolescent to 60 years of age, were eligible for armed service. The Hoplites formed tight phalanx and would march in compact formations to the sound of flutes. The name "hoplite" is derived from the word used to describe the large and heavy wooden shield, oplon, that with the helmet, cuirass and bronze greaves, formed the panoply of the Greek infantry. The weight of the Hoplite's armour was great and could not be worn for long periods of time. A Greek helmet was more bulky and heavier than a medieval helmet, so, like the shield, wich was made of wood covered in bronze sheets, it was often carried on the shoulders or rested on the ground before battle. Every soldier carried the shield into battle po protect himself and his comrade to his left. The unit would move forward in a phalanx formation, often against their enemies (fron other Greek cities) who used the same method and formation of combact, the phalanx. Ancient Greek poetry recalls how the clash of shields was terrifying and reverberated on the bronze crested helmets of the Hoplites.
