Byzantine Infantry Official - VI Century A.D. During the Persian–Byzantine wars the front-line troops wore heavier armour than other legionaries, and carried a bigger shield. The model is wearing chain-mail covering all his body except his arms, which are protected by metal bands and a leather wrap. The helmet also has chain-mail protecting the neck area, and the crest is engraved as an indication of the high rank of the wearer. The weapons are a speculum, which is a type of pitchfork, a lancea – a Celtic lance, a two-edged sword and a saax – a Germanic dagger, carried hanging from the belt.
