IJN Abukuma Light Cruiser The Abukuma was a smartly designed 5500 ton light cruiser and the sixth ship built in the Nagara class in 1925. The Japanese Navy was proud of her offensive ability being armed with 7x140mm guns and 4x610mm torpedo tubes with a top speed of 36 knots. In October, 1930 during a training exercise, the Abukuma lost its bow which was replaced becoming the only ship in the Nagara class to have a high double curved bow. After the modernization of the ship, the Abukuma was installed with powerful two 4x610mm oxygen torpedo bays. During the Pacific War, it served as the flagship for the 1st Torpedo squadron and as an anti-submarine escort for the attack on Pearl Harbor. In taking part of the successful Kiska Island withdrawal maneuvers which was called “the miracle maneuver”, Abukuma’s luck ran out in October 1944, where she met her fate being destroyed by B-24 bombers in the Battle of Leyte Gulf.
